Ants were generally thought to share only nutrients and enzymes through a mouth-to-mouth feeding process called trophallaxis. But when Adria LeBoeuf at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and her co-workers analysed the oral liquid of the species Camponotus floridanus , they found 64 microRNAs, 49 long-chained hydrocarbons, a hormone that regulates growth and more than 50 proteins involved in development, digestion and immunity.

It's time to Kiss and Tell! From firsts to worsts, we're talking swapping spit all Valentine's week long. In this installment, Alli Maloney explores the science of kissing. Kissing is the end to many stories we tell, a passionate moment when two meant-to-be people realize their love — an action driven by romance. We dream of our first and dread our last and, when deemed bad, move along quickly.
Collecting ant spit
For years, scientists suspected that genetics shaped individual salivary microbiomes, but new research published in the journal mBio counters that theory. Adam Roberts and Andrew Smith, along with their research team, analyzed a unique sample set: DNA and saliva from an extended family of Ashkenazi Jews living in households spread across four cities on three continents, plus additional DNA and saliva from unrelated individuals. Smith, an immunologist at University College London, knew about the collected Ashkenazi data that had been used for other studies. Because the individuals are all ultra-orthodox Ashkenazi Jews, they share cultural diets and lifestyles that control for many confounding factors. As a result, the dataset offers an opportunity to investigate the effects of environment and genetics separately. The researchers sequenced the bacterial DNA signatures present in the saliva samples from family members as well as 27 unrelated Ashkenazi Jews. The greatest determinant by far was household environment.
Autumn invokes such strange and wonderful feelings in all of us, which made our choosing a winning story and photograph all the more challenging. Along with the agonizingly slow anticipation of change that every fall delivers, the expiration of our affair would linger. Similar to the transformation of autumn leaves, ours was a suspenseful essence of the foreboding kind, which would thoughtlessly dissipate before I could grasp it. So on this day, which so delicately delivers the onset of autumnal nostalgia, I am reminded of the daring exhilaration that comes with the acquiescence of downfall. Autumn, despite its aesthetic, awakens the flaws of an unsympathetic reality, offering one final call to change.
